Short answer: November to January is a good time for Aruba, but it is not the dry season. Officially, Aruba’s rainy season runs September through January. Expect warm days around 87–89°F, short showers, and the most events of the year. November is the best value. Mid-December to early January is the most expensive and the most crowded. If you want Christmas or New Year’s, book flights and hotels now.
I live here, and Aruba in December, plus the weeks on either side, is my favorite stretch of the year. The island is busy with Sinterklaas, gaita music, pagaras and the start of Carnival. But I won’t sell you “guaranteed sunshine.” Here is what the weather really does, what happens on which date, and how to book without overpaying.
Weather in November, December and January
The Departamento Meteorologico Aruba defines the dry season as roughly February to June. The rainy season starts in September and ends in January. So these three months are the wettest part of the year here. That sounds worse than it is.
Aruba is still a dry island. Rain usually comes as short showers, often at night or early morning, and then the sun is back. Look at the “hours with rain” row below. Even December, the month with the most rain days, averages about 52 hours of rain in the entire month.
| Month | Avg high | Avg low | Rainfall | Days with rain | Hours with rain | Avg wind |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 89°F (31.5°C) | 79°F (26.0°C) | 3.4 in (87 mm) | 9.6 | 47 | 12.5 mph |
| December | 87°F (30.7°C) | 78°F (25.3°C) | 3.2 in (80 mm) | 11.0 | 52 | 15 mph |
| January | 87°F (30.3°C) | 77°F (24.8°C) | 1.7 in (44 mm) | 10.8 | 44 | 16 mph |
Source: Meteorological Department Aruba, climate normals 1991–2020. A “day with rain” means at least 1 mm. Wind converted from m/s.
What this means for your trip:
- November is the wettest and least windy month of the year. It can feel humid and sticky on calm days. Pack a light rain layer.
- December still has showers, but the trade winds come back and the heat feels softer.
- January has about half of November’s rainfall, and the wind keeps building. Kitesurfers and windsurfers start to smile. Hats with a chin strap help.
What about hurricanes?
Aruba is not “outside the hurricane belt.” The Meteorological Department says we sit on its southern fringe. Direct hits are rare, and the department notes that serious damage from storms passing just south of the island happens about once every 100 years. The Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30. For a late-November trip, buy travel insurance anyway and watch the forecast the week before you fly.

November: best value, Carnival opens
Before Thanksgiving, November is the quietest and usually the cheapest month in this window. High-season hotel rates normally don’t start until mid-December.
Carnival season opens on 11/11 at 11:11
Every year, Carnival season officially opens on November 11 at 11:11 am, and the schedule for the season is announced. In 2026 that is a Wednesday. Don’t expect parades yet. This is the start of the preparation months. You will hear Carnival music on the radio and see groups rehearsing in the evenings.
Beach tennis at Bushiri Beach, November 12–15
Aruba is one of the big names in beach tennis. The 2026 Sand Series Aruba runs November 12–15 at Bushiri Beach, just outside Oranjestad. It is an SS100-grade event on the ITF Beach Tennis World Tour, and the ITF lists $100,000 in prize money. Last year the Aruba Open ran November 9–16 with a record $125,000 in total prize money. If you play, check the tournament site for amateur divisions. If you just want to watch, it is an easy evening out, a short drive from the hotel areas.
Sinterklaas arrives by boat
Sinterklaas usually arrives in mid-November. In 2025 he arrived on Sunday, November 16, by boat at the cruise terminal, then rode a tram through downtown to Plaza La Linda on Caya Grandi (Government of Aruba). The 2026 date is not announced yet. It is a free, family event, and the kids go wild. December 5 is the evening when the gifts come.
Thanksgiving week
US Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. That week, flights and hotels fill up fast. If you want a quiet November, come before the 21st.
December: Christmas the Aruban way
December is the busiest month for cruise ships. In December 2025 Aruba had 69 cruise calls and 160,420 cruise passengers, the highest of any month that year (Aruba Ports Authority statistics). Downtown Oranjestad is packed on those days.
Gaita, ayaca and pagara
From November until Christmas you will hear gaita bands in malls, restaurants and homes. Gaita is Christmas music that came from Venezuela and became part of our own holidays. Traffic circles get decorated by local companies, and houses get painted and lit up.
Christmas food is a mix. Look for ayaca (a banana-leaf parcel with a seasoned meat filling, a Christmas must), keshi yena (stuffed cheese), pineapple ham, ham-filled bread, and Dutch oliebollen. Many restaurants run special Christmas menus in the weeks before December 26.
The pagara is our end-of-year signature. It is a very long string of firecrackers, laid out in front of a business or a home and lit. Tradition says it chases away bad spirits before the new year. Businesses light theirs in the last days of December and on December 31. If you hear a roar that lasts many minutes, walk toward it. It is free to watch. Stand back and protect your ears.
Christmas and Boxing Day closures
December 25 and 26 are public holidays. Locals go to the beach on Boxing Day. Some local shops and supermarkets close early or keep short hours around Christmas and New Year’s. Resort restaurants stay open. Stock up on water and snacks a day early if you stay in a rental.
New Year’s Eve: fireworks, pagara and Dande
Fireworks go on sale the day after Christmas and are sold until December 31 (VisitAruba). The main show is at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and it is island-wide. Hotels and towns fire their own shows, and families set off their own in every neighborhood. Hilltops give the widest view. The beach in front of your hotel is also fine.
Dande is the music that welcomes the new year. Small groups of musicians go from house to house, singing blessings in Papiamento for each family member, and someone passes a hat. You will hear Dande on the radio after Christmas. The house visits peak on New Year’s Day and continue into the first days of January. As a visitor you will hear it at hotels and events. If a local family invites you in when the Dande group arrives, say yes.
Most resorts sell New Year’s Eve dinners and parties. Prices and programs for 2026 are not out yet at the time of writing. Book early, and read the cancellation terms before you pay.
January: Carnival parades start
January is when Carnival goes to the streets. The Torch Parade on Saturday, January 9, 2027 is the first parade of the season. It runs at night, with lit costumes and music trucks. After that come the Fantasy Parade (January 17), the children’s parades (January 23 and 24), the Masquerade Parade (January 29), and the Grand Lighting Parade in Oranjestad on January 30. Jouvert Morning in San Nicolas is the same day, early in the morning.
The big Grand Parades are in February: San Nicolas on February 6 and Oranjestad on February 7, with Carnival Monday on February 8. The Burning of King Momo closes the season. Sources disagree on the 2027 date, so check the official schedule closer to the time.
Tips for watching a parade:
- Watching from the roadside costs nothing. Arrive early for a spot near the barriers.
- Bring a folding chair, water, sunscreen and a hat for day parades.
- Roads close along the routes. Plan your drive or taxi around them.
- Parades run late. Plan a slow next morning.
January 25 is Dia di Betico, a public holiday for Gilberto François “Betico” Croes, the leader behind Aruba’s Status Aparte. There is a national celebration at Plaza Betico in Oranjestad, plus cultural and sports events.
On days with two or more cruise ships in port, downtown and the most popular tours fill up fast. My guide to Aruba shore excursions shows which tours get busy when ships are in.
What not to plan around
- Bon Bini Festival: VisitAruba says the weekly festival at Fort Zoutman is “on a short break.” Don’t build a Tuesday night around it.
- Soul Beach Music Festival: it moved to Curaçao in 2026. It is no longer an Aruba event.
Flights: book now for the holidays
If you are flying over Christmas or New Year’s, you are already in the booking window. SmarterTravel puts the best time to book Christmas flights to the Caribbean and Mexico at October 7 to November 29, 2026, with the lowest average fares around November 5. Waiting past that usually costs more.
New nonstop options this winter:
- Montreal: Air Transat starts weekly flights on December 12, 2026 (VisitAruba).
- Detroit: Delta starts weekly Saturday flights on December 19, 2026, through April 11, 2027. Delta also adds a second daily Boston flight, and cuts Minneapolis to one Saturday flight a week (BES Reporter).

Where to stay, and when to book
High season, with the highest hotel rates, runs from mid-December to mid-April. That makes the calendar simple:
- Early to mid-November: best rates and the most choice.
- Thanksgiving week: busy. Book now.
- December 1–15: often a sweet spot before high season pricing.
- Christmas to New Year’s: the most expensive week of the year. Book as soon as you can.
- January: high season rates, but fewer families after the school break. Carnival weekends add a local buzz.
Not sure which beach? Read Palm Beach vs Eagle Beach first. Palm Beach has the high-rise hotels, restaurants and nightlife. Eagle Beach is wider and calmer, with low-rise hotels. For a splurge over the holidays, see my picks for luxury resorts and villas in Aruba.
Good holiday bases:
- Palm Beach: Hyatt Regency Aruba and Aruba Marriott Resort. Walk to restaurants and the New Year’s Eve hotel fireworks.
- Eagle Beach: Manchebo Beach Resort and Amsterdam Manor. Quieter, and closer to Oranjestad for the Carnival parades.

Practical costs and arrival tips
ED card and the $20 Sustainability Fee
Every visitor arriving by air fills in the online ED card before the trip at edcardaruba.aw. The $20 Sustainability Fee is paid there by card. You can’t pay it at the airport. Children under eight are exempt. Step by step help is in my Aruba ED card guide.
Taxis over the holidays
Taxi fares went up in May 2026. Official fares are on taxi.aw. Key rules from the official conditions:
- Minimum fare: $10.
- Night surcharge: $5, from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am.
- Holiday surcharge: $5 on Sundays, official holidays, and every day from December 24 through January 1. That covers New Year’s Eve.
- The surcharge is charged once per trip, not per person.
- Airport trips: one suitcase plus one backpack or handbag per passenger is included. Each extra piece costs $3.
Taxis can be hard to find right after midnight on New Year’s Eve. Arrange your ride home early, or stay within walking distance of the party. For buses, rental cars and more, see my complete guide to transportation in Aruba.
Budget
Your biggest cost in this window is the hotel, and it depends on the week more than anything else. For daily food, activity and transport costs, use my Aruba vacation cost breakdown.
Quick verdict
- Best value: early to mid-November. Warm, quiet, and some rain.
- Best holiday atmosphere: Christmas to New Year’s. Expensive and busy, but the pagaras, fireworks and Dande are unique.
- Best mix of weather and culture: January. Less rain, more wind, and the first Carnival parades.
Whichever month you pick, book flights before the end of November, pay your ED card fee before you fly, and check the official event pages a week before you arrive. Dates here are as of October 25, 2026. I will update this post when the 2026 Sinterklaas date and New Year’s events are announced.
